Abstract: A shell and tube heat exchanger (one shell pass and one tube pass) is a heat exchange device between hot fluid and cold fluid. It is used widely in process industry for cooling, heating and heat exchange stream in intercooler and reactor charge heater. In this project, a model will be designed to remove heat of exhaust gases from a Diesel Engine (Compression-Ignition). The hot exhaust gas is hot fluid and water is cold fluid. Several experiments are conducted in laboratory. Initially, experiments are conducted on the Diesel Engine to find out the range of exhaust gas temperatures and the amount of cooling water as well. These data served as a guideline for selecting the operating parameters for the design of suitable heat exchanger. In addition, an analysis of heat exchanger behavior is made using Solidworks and EFD lab software. The analysis will develop an awareness of fouling surfaces for heat exchanger. By using EFD lab software, the model simulation can be predicted before fabrication. The model may be use as commercialization product for daily application such as making hot beverages.
